First Six Weeks

 

Spelling:  Short vowels; vowel-consonant-e pattern; long vowels; long "o" words

Language:  Sentences; nouns

Science:  Plant Growth

Social Studies:  Map skills (U.S. cities, continents, major oceans, locating specific locations on a map/globe); Community governments- (Laws, lawmakers, role of citizens in a community); Citizenship; Time Lines- (Use a time line to track important events); Cultural diversity- (Appreciate different backgrounds, beliefs, customs, and languages); Compare and Contrast different types of communities.

Reading:  Sequencing; Drawing conclusions; cause and effect; setting a purpose for reading; comprehension; character; unfamiliar words; multiple-meaning words; short vowels; double consonants; long vowels; listening/speaking skills; writing self-descriptions; writing process.

 

Second Six Weeks

Spelling: Three letter clusters; long "i" sound; "ow"/"ou" sound; short "o" sound spelled "o", "aw", "al"; unexpected consonant patterns (kn, wr, tch).

Language:  Nouns (singular, plural, singular possessive, plural possessive); compounds; topic sentences; main idea/details; friendly letter

Science:  Animals/ Living Organisms

Social Studies:  Map and globe skills (compass rose, map key, legend); locate equator, continents on map; describe how change impacts lives of people; sequence events in chronological order; note the difference between a primary and secondary source.

Reading:  Graphic sources; realism/fantasy; context clues; fact/opinion; maid idea/supporting details; compound words; sequence; vowel digraph "oo"; author's purpose.

Math:  Addition/subtraction with and without regrouping; estimation of sums; solve addition/subtraction word problems; tell time to the half and quarter hour; use of calendar; estimate time; elapsed time; measurement.

 

Third Six Weeks

Spelling:  Vowel +r sounds, or sound as heard in coin, spelling the "j" sound as "j" or "g"; spelling the k and kw sound

Reading:   Steps in a process; summarizing; text structure; visualizing; generalizing; compare/contrast; sequence; r-controlled vowels; base words; silent letters; context clues; digraphs

Language:  Pronouns (subject, object, possessive); using I and me; homophones; facts and opinions; paragraph that persuades; comma usage; verbs (present, past, spelling).

Math:  Multiplication; relation of arrays and repeated addition to multiplication; missing factors; multiply three factors; solve word problems that involve addition; subtraction, or multiplication; word problems that involve more than one step.

Social Studies:  How changes can affect communities; compare ways communities change with ways they stay the same; contrast unplanned changes in a community with other types of change; compare maps from different times; explain how geographical location affects way of life, Tenochtitlan Native American tribe; methods for finding solutions to problems; why early colonists wanted a change in government; roles of the Declaration of Independence and Constitution in establishing new government.

Science:   Different types of matter; properties of matter; chemical/physical changes; forms of energy; push/pull; force; sound caused by vibrations.

 

Fourth Six Weeks

Spelling:  r controlled words; homophones; compound words; ed/ing endings; final "y" to "i".

Language:  Verbs (present, past, spelling); prefixes; realism/fantasy; verbs (with special past forms, be verbs, main verbs, helping verbs, irregular verbs); contractions, suffixes.

Reading:  Theme; setting; cause/effect; comparing/contrasting; idioms; antonyms; diphthongs "oi"/"oy"; bar graphs; circle graphs; possessives; three letter blends.

Math:  Multiplication facts through 10 (memorize); missing factors; multiply three factors; word problems; read/make bar graphs; tally charts/ pictographs/ use graphs to solve problems; grids; probability.

Science:  Forms of energy; complete/incomplete circuits; magnetism; human eye; sound caused by vibration; human ear; rocks and minerals.

Social Studies:  Three branches of government; duties of the President; Supreme Court; read a table; rights/responsibilities; majority; rule; steps in voting process; Americans who have worked to make life better for others; evaluate the meaning of the flag of the United States; identify symbol used in the Great Seal of the United States and the Treaty Seal of 1825; understand the meaning of the symbols.

 

Fifth Six Weeks

Spelling:  Prefixes re and un; suffixes ful, ly and er, vccv pattern; double consonants; the letter c when it sounds like an s

Reading: Making judgments; text structure; plurals; possessives; fact/opinion; visualizing r controlled vowels; predicting; graphic sources; prefixes im, dis, non; author's purpose; inflected endings; consonant k spelled, ck, ch; plot; theme; time line.

Language: Adjectives; adjectives that compare a, an, the; synonyms; oral descriptions; using senses to describe; writing a paragraph that describes.

Math:  Arrays to show division; use 2-9 as divisors; fact families for multiplication and division; division with remainders; word problems with addition; subtraction; multiplication; division; recognize plane/solid figures; recognize properties of geometric figures, identify lines; line segments; rays; right angles; congruent figures; similar figures; symmetrical figures; continue geometric patterns; recognize figures same if turned; find perimeter; area; volume.

Science:  Recognize there are three types of rocks; rocks are made from minerals; kinds of soil; how rocks and soil are important; use of natural resources; layers of the earth; how water and wind affect the earth; how earthquakes and volcanoes change the earth's crust; how living things change the earth.

Social Studies:  Apply critical thinking skills to organize and use information; interpret information using visuals; legendary heroes; fact/fiction; recognize that individuals have helped the country grow and change; identify scientists and inventors who have created or invented new technology; monuments and memorials to honor people; cutaway diagrams.

 

Sixth Six Weeks

Spelling:  Vowel sounds in "tooth" and "cook";  Vowel sound in "bought"; words ending in "er" or "le"; words beginning with "a" or "be"; contractions.

Reading:  Steps in a process/generalizing; setting/making judgements/ syllabication/compound sentences/poster announcement; Visualizing/generalizing/digraphs au, aw/commas; Plot/setting; digraphs ui, ew; syllabication/quotations/fiction and nonfiction; newspaper; realism and fantasy; making judgements; affixes; digraphs aw, au;  persuasive writing; subject-verb agreement; fantasy and myth.

Language:  Sentence review;  compound sentences; commas; quotations; subject/verb agreement.

Math:  Fractions; equivalent fractions; comparing fractions; fractional parts of sets; mixed numbers; decimals in 10ths/100ths/ +/- decimals; multiplication patterns; multiplying greater numbers; division with remainders; estimating products; division patterns; dividing 2-digit numbers.

Science:  Clouds and storms; sun, moon, planets; bones and muscles; health

Social Studies:  Population maps; cultural diversity; holiday customs and traditions; community history; U.S. history; free enterprise; world economy; earning and spending money.
